Atlassian Step-Up Credits: How to Maximize Data Center License Value

A step-up credit applies the value of your current Atlassian Data Center user tier toward the next tier up, so when you grow past a breakpoint you pay the difference rather than the full larger tier. Used well, it lets you grow into the right tier without paying twice, but only if you time the move before the 30 March 2026 end of new sales. After that cutoff, Data Center is renewal-only and your room to optimise the tier narrows.

Here is where the money is left on the table. An Atlassian Data Center customer crosses a user breakpoint mid-term, the reseller quotes the next tier at full list, and nobody asks the obvious question: what happened to the value already paid on the current tier? That value is the step-up credit, and it is the difference between buying the larger tier twice and buying the gap once. With Data Center moving to renewal-only after March 2026, the window to use step-ups well is closing, which makes this a now problem, not a next-renewal problem. The full migration backdrop is in our Atlassian Data Center end-of-life 2026 migration and cost guide.

What exactly is an Atlassian Data Center step-up credit?

Atlassian Data Center licenses on user tiers, with set breakpoints as your user count grows. A step-up credit is the mechanism that applies what you already paid at your current tier toward the next tier up, so you pay the incremental difference rather than the full price of the larger tier. It is the vendor's way of letting you grow without repurchasing from zero, and it is genuine value, but it is value you have to claim and time. The credit is most useful when you are about to cross a breakpoint anyway and can confirm the terms before the product goes renewal-only.

When does the Data Center window close?

Atlassian has set no new Data Center sales after 30 March 2026, with renewals available through 30 March 2028 and full retirement expected around 2029. Confirm the milestone for your specific products, because dates can vary by SKU, but plan around the new-sales cutoff. Before it, you have the option to step up tiers and restructure; after it, you are renewing what you have. That asymmetry is the reason timing matters more than usual here.

How do you maximize Data Center license value before end of sale?

Four moves, in order, capture the value the credit makes available.

  1. Right-size the user tier first. Reconcile licensed users against active ones so you step up to the tier you need, not the tier your drifted count implies.
  2. Time the step-up to the breakpoint. If real growth will cross a breakpoint, capture the step-up credit before the new-sales cutoff rather than after, when the option may close.
  3. Negotiate the uplift hard. Data Center list pricing has risen 15 to 40 percent in recent cycles, so a capped uplift on the renewal is worth more than a one-time concession.
  4. Weigh the runway against the cloud move. A longer Data Center runway has value, but price it against the eventual cloud migration so the step-up is a deliberate choice, not a delay tactic.

Across our ITSM and Atlassian engagements the firm averages a 30% reduction. On Data Center, much of it comes from right-sizing the tier before the step-up and capping an uplift that vendors have been pushing up 15 to 40 percent, rather than from the step-up credit alone.

What does Atlassian argue, and how do you counter?

Expect the reseller or Atlassian to treat the next tier as a clean new purchase and to quote the renewal uplift as fixed. Counter the first by insisting the step-up credit is applied and documented, not waived by omission. Counter the second by treating the uplift as negotiable, because given the scale of recent Data Center increases, an uncapped renewal is where the real cost lives. And expect a push toward cloud as the destination; that may well be right, but make it a costed decision rather than a reflex, weighing the Data Center runway against the migration. What to do next

Reconcile your licensed users now, identify any breakpoint you are about to cross, and decide whether to step up before the 30 March 2026 new-sales cutoff. Insist the step-up credit is applied in writing, cap the renewal uplift against the 15 to 40 percent list rises, and price the eventual cloud move so the runway is a deliberate choice. We have negotiated over $420M in ITSM and platform contract value across more than ten platforms and over 500 engagements, and we run Atlassian renewals through our renewal advisory service on fixed fee or gainshare.
